Viana Desert and Santa Monica Beach: one tour or two?
Updated October 25, 2026 · 4 min read
The Viana Desert and Santa Monica Beach are two of Boa Vista’s defining landscapes, but they are not beside each other. Viana’s pale dunes lie in the north-west; Santa Monica stretches along the south-west coast. Combining them means a substantial 4x4 day, while a focused southern trip leaves more time for the beach.
Choose by pace, not by the longest stop list
A broad island circuit suits a first visit when you want dunes, villages, caves and coast in one booking. A southern route is better if swimming time and Varandinha’s rock formations matter more than seeing the north. The official tourism site describes Santa Monica as an exposed, wave-affected beach, so a photo stop does not guarantee safe swimming. Follow local guidance.
Viana is a landscape visit rather than a large Sahara-style crossing. Wind reshapes the sand around volcanic rocks and sparse plants. Stay on the guide’s route and do not drive over vegetation.
What to check before booking
Ask how long the tour actually spends at each place, whether lunch is included, what vehicle is used and whether hotel pickup adds time. The tracks are sandy and uneven; confirm access with the operator if climbing into a high 4x4 or a bumpy ride may be difficult.
For most visitors with only one free excursion day, the four-hour Santa Monica, dunes, caves and village 4x4 tour offers the clearest compromise. It starts from €65 in the current selection.
