Sharks and snorkelling on Boa Vista: choose the right trip
Updated October 25, 2026 · 4 min read
“Sharks and snorkelling” describes different experiences. Island tours may stop in shallow water to observe lemon sharks; boat trips visit reefs near Djeu or Gatas Bay. A combined day tour also includes long overland sections and therefore less water time. Decide on your priority first.
Shark observation is not reef snorkelling
At a shallow stop, follow the guide and never chase or touch wildlife. A reef trip is better for sustained swimming. Beginners should choose an operator that provides equipment, a safety briefing and active guidance.
Questions before booking
Check the water entry, required swimming ability, equipment, life jackets, group size and whether swell can change the route. A species name may describe a possibility or place, never a guaranteed sighting.
Our choice
For reef time, the Gatas Bay snorkelling trip is more focused than a full island circuit.
