Sal Rei independently: an easy walking plan
Updated October 25, 2026 · 4 min read
Sal Rei is compact enough for an unhurried walk and rewards observation more than a checklist. Begin around the harbour and Praça de Santa Isabel, then wander through streets of low colourful houses. The official tourism site connects the town’s name with its former salt trade and identifies it as Boa Vista’s main urban centre.
A simple route
From the centre, look across the bay towards Djeu and the ruins of Forte Duque de Bragança. The islet is not part of an ordinary town walk; reaching it requires a suitable boat outing. Continue to Praia Diante for harbour life and a sunset view, or towards Praia de Cabral for a longer seaside walk.
Markets, museums and churches may change hours, so check locally rather than building the day around an assumed timetable. Dress respectfully when entering a church and ask before photographing people.
When a guide adds value
You do not need a tour for navigation. A local guide becomes useful for the salt-trade history, architecture and stories that have no signboard. If you prefer water time, a separate Sal Rei Bay trip is the clearer choice.
