Boa Vista with children: beaches, dunes and realistic tour choices
Updated October 25, 2026 · 4 min read
Boa Vista works well for families who enjoy sand, open landscapes and a slow pace. The difficult part is not finding activities, but choosing one that fits a child’s stamina. Long 4x4 days are dusty and bumpy; boat trips add sun, wind and motion; remote beaches may have no shade or facilities.
Match the outing to the child
For younger children, a short Sal Rei walk or time near the hotel is often easier than a north-to-south island circuit. Older children may enjoy Viana’s dunes, a village stop or a focused southern 4x4 route. Never infer a minimum age from the activity type. Operators set their own limits, so check the booking page for every child.
On a boat trip, ask about shade, toilet, life jackets in the correct size, water entry and the option to remain aboard during a swim stop. For personal seasickness or sun-protection questions, speak to a pharmacist or doctor before travelling.
Beaches require judgement on the day
The official tourism site promotes Praia de Chaves for families, but Atlantic conditions still change. Santa Monica is beautiful and exposed, with strong waves mentioned by the same official source. Treat it as a landscape stop unless local conditions and supervision make swimming appropriate.
A half-day outing is often the better family purchase: it leaves room for food, rest and a change of plan. Confirm pickup time, child seats and every inclusion with the operator; none should be assumed.
